A partnership between local law enforcement, seniors and senior service providers
Bay Transit is re-launching a transportation service – MedCarry – that provides non-emergency medical transportation for people age 60+ who live in the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula. It depends on volunteer drivers and donations to provide the service, for a round-trip fee of $5 for 50 miles or less and $10 for 51 miles or more. They ask for 48 hours’ notice for trip requests.
If you would like to volunteer, or to use the service, call 804-683-6977 (toll-free 1-877-869-6046). And spread the word!
Volunteers over age 55 should register with the RSVP program (a network of senior volunteers), which just means filling out a simple application. You’ll need to submit your DMV record—if you become an active volunteer, Bay Transit will reimburse you the $8 fee—and a copy of your personal auto insurance policy. Bay Transit will conduct a criminal background check. Drivers will be reimbursed for mileage (currently 38 cents/mile).
You can discuss your availability and how far you’re willing to travel; Katherine Newman of Bay Transit also said they will try to accommodate requests by volunteers and users who prefer to travel with people they know.
